If you're looking for a solid afternoon on the water without the early morning wake-up call, this 4-hour striped bass charter out of Sandy Hook Bay is your ticket. We're talking about a 1:00 PM departure from Leonardo State Marina, giving you time to grab lunch and still get in some quality fishing time. Sandy Hook Bay has been producing consistent action for stripers, fluke, seabass, and blackfish, and with up to 6 anglers on board, it's perfect for families or a group of friends who want to share the experience without breaking the bank.
This isn't your typical crowded party boat situation - you're getting a private charter with Captain who knows these waters like the back of his hand. Sandy Hook Bay offers some of the most productive inshore fishing on the Jersey coast, and we'll be working both trolling patterns and bottom fishing depending on what the fish are telling us that day. The beauty of this trip is the flexibility - if the stripers are busting bait on the surface, we'll switch to trolling. If they're holding deep around structure, we'll drop down with some fresh bait and work the bottom. You don't need to bring anything except your fishing license (New Jersey saltwater registry is free and required), and maybe a cooler with some cold beverages and snacks. Beer is welcome, but leave the hard stuff at home - we want everyone safe and having a good time.
All your tackle and bait come included, so you can leave your gear at home if you want. We're set up for both trolling and bottom fishing, which gives us the best shot at multiple species throughout the afternoon. When we're trolling for stripers, we'll be pulling umbrella rigs, bunker spoons, and sometimes live eels if conditions are right. The trolling motor keeps us moving through productive water while covering ground to find active fish. For bottom fishing, we'll anchor up on structure where seabass and blackfish like to hang out, using fresh clams, squid, and whatever bait is working best that week. The rods are medium to heavy action, perfect for handling anything from schoolie stripers to keeper fluke, and the reels are smooth enough that even first-time anglers can feel confident working a fish.
Sandy Hook Bay's striped bass population has been showing up strong, especially during the afternoon hours when bait starts moving with the tide changes. These fish range from schoolies around 18-22 inches up to keepers in the 28-35 inch range, with the occasional cow showing up to make your day. Stripers are aggressive feeders here, and they'll hit everything from live bunker to soft plastics. The summer flounder, or fluke as we call them, have been consistent producers too. These flatfish are ambush predators that bury themselves in the sand and mud, waiting for an easy meal to swim by. They're fun to catch because they fight hard and make excellent table fare. Sea bass round out the mixed bag, and while they might not be the biggest fighters, they're plentiful around the rocky structure and wrecks we fish, and they're some of the best eating fish in these waters.
Striped bass are the main attraction here, and for good reason. These fish are available from May through November in Sandy Hook Bay, with the peak action happening during the summer months when baitfish are thick. Stripers are known for their powerful runs and head-shaking fights, and they can range anywhere from 2 pounds to over 40 pounds in these waters. What makes them so exciting is their unpredictability - one minute you might be catching schoolies, and the next, a monster shows up and nearly spools your reel. They're also excellent eating if you decide to keep a few within the regulations.
Summer flounder, better known as fluke, are another customer favorite. These flatfish are masters of camouflage and can grow up to 8-10 pounds in Sandy Hook Bay, though most of what we catch runs 2-5 pounds. Fluke season typically runs from May through September, with the best action in the warmer months. They're structure-oriented fish that love sandy bottoms near drop-offs, and they'll absolutely crush a well-presented bucktail or live killies. The fight might not be as flashy as a striper, but they're scrappy and make up for it on the dinner table.
Sea bass might be the smallest of our target species, but they make up for size with numbers and taste. These fish are year-round residents around structure, though the best fishing happens from May through October. They're curious fish that will investigate anything that looks like food, making them great for kids and beginners. Most sea bass in Sandy Hook Bay run 1-3 pounds, but they're incredibly good eating and will often bite when nothing else is cooperating. They're also fun on light tackle because they fight harder than their size suggests.
At $700 for up to 6 people, this trip offers serious value for a private charter experience. That breaks down to around $115 per person if you fill the boat, which is tough to beat for 4 hours of quality fishing with all tackle and bait included. The season runs from May 1st through December 1st, giving you plenty of opportunities to get out there. Just remember to book at least a week in advance if you need to cancel, and don't forget that 20% cash tip for the captain - it's standard practice and much appreciated. Whether you're introducing the kids to saltwater fishing, planning a guys' trip, or just want to spend an afternoon doing something different, this Sandy Hook Bay charter delivers the goods without the hassle of an all-day commitment.
